Zinedine Zidane revisited the defining chapters of his legendary career in an interview with L’Équipe, reflecting on moments that shaped both his life and football history.

Much of those memories are tied to his time at Real Madrid, first as a player during the iconic ‘Galácticos’ era and later as a manager. Among his former teammates, Zidane reserved special praise for Ronaldo Nazário.

“‘The Phenomenon.’ He still is. Unique,” Zidane said. “I was lucky to play with him for a long time at Real Madrid. He really was ‘The Phenomenon.’ And he was so kind and funny. You wanted to do anything to be his friend. But you should have seen him train. Impressive. Some players would stop playing just to watch him. It was as beautiful as a match.”

From Galáctico to Coach

After retiring, Zidane returned to Madrid as head coach and led the club to one of the most dominant eras in modern football, including three consecutive Champions League titles. He spoke with admiration about the professionalism and quality of his squad.

“It’s in training where you see the great players. I felt the same when I was Real Madrid’s coach. I didn’t say anything. I watched Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Cristiano Ronaldo, or Karim Benzema train. There was nothing to say, except watch. They were all talented and professional. They never lost possession.”

The Glasgow Volley

One of the most iconic moments of his playing career remains his stunning left-foot volley against Bayer Leverkusen in the 2002 Champions League final in Glasgow.

“Those three photos in a row are like a suspended apotheosis. It was what allowed me to complete my trophy cabinet. I came to Real Madrid to win the Champions League. We won it with that goal. Not bad, right? It was the last big trophy I was missing.”

France 1998: A Life Changed

Zidane also reflected on winning the 1998 World Cup with France national football team.

“The day after Brazil, I understood that my life would never be the same again. It’s true: the French national team changed my life.”

A career filled with iconic images, decisive goals and historic triumphs — Zidane’s legacy continues to resonate.
