Federico Valverde delivered a historic performance for Real Madrid with his unforgettable hat trick against Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. With those three goals, the captain became only the second midfielder in the club’s history to score a hat trick in a European Cup match.

The Uruguayan matched the record of legendary Real Madrid figure José Martínez Pirri. Pirri achieved the feat on September 18, 1968, when he scored three goals against AEL Limassol in the first round of that season’s European Cup, a match that ended in a 6-0 victory. Two of his goals came in the first half (11’ and 14’), with the third arriving in the 62nd minute.

Valverde produced a spectacular display against Manchester City. His first goal arrived in the 20th minute after a long pass from Thibaut Courtois allowed him to break past Alex O'Reilly before finishing past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Just seven minutes later, Valverde struck again with a powerful left footed shot across goal from inside the box. He completed his brilliant performance in the 43rd minute, cleverly chipping the ball over Marc Guéhi before finishing with his right foot to make it 3-0.

At the final whistle, Pirri, who was celebrating his 81st birthday, came down to the pitch and warmly embraced Valverde, symbolically passing the torch after the Uruguayan equaled his historic record.
