Federico Valverde left the derby frustrated after receiving a red card during Real Madrid’s victory over Atlético Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu. The midfielder was angry about missing the final minutes of the match and the upcoming league game, but the referee’s official report could lead to an even harsher sanction.

Referee José Luis Munuera Montero explained the decision in the match report:

"In the 77th minute, player (8) VALVERDE DIPETTA, FEDERICO SANTIAGO was sent off for the following reason: for kicking an opponent, without being within range of being played, using excessive force."

Because the report states that the ball was not within playing distance, the Uruguayan could face a two-match suspension in La Liga. If confirmed, Valverde would miss not only the upcoming game against RCD Mallorca at Son Moix on Matchday 30, but also the following match against Girona FC at the Bernabéu on Matchday 31.

Real Madrid have strongly criticized the decision through their media channels and are expected to appeal the sanction once it becomes official, hoping the red card will be overturned.

During the match, Munuera Montero was also seen explaining his decision to coach Álvaro Arbeloa. According to footage captured by Movistar Plus+ Deportes, the referee justified the red card by saying the tackle came from behind and that the player’s only intention was to bring the opponent down with excessive force.
