José Mourinho defended the significance of Real Madrid's 4-3 victory over Roma at the Stadio Olimpico, highlighting the difficulty of facing an opponent that plays at a high tempo and constantly looks for one-on-one situations. The Portuguese coach also stressed that, with the exception of Arsenal, Madrid had already faced some of the toughest challenges on their schedule.
The latest predictions from the Champions League supercomputer appear to support his assessment. Real Madrid's six points from their matches against Inter Milan and Roma have put them in a strong position in the league phase projections. The model places Los Blancos second, behind only Arsenal, with 17.28 expected points. Barcelona are third with 16.92.
Real Madrid's projected chances of finishing in the top eight are also encouraging. Those positions guarantee direct qualification for the round of 16, and the model gives Mourinho's side a 76.90% probability of securing a place among the leading teams.
Arsenal, whom Mourinho identified as one of the biggest challenges on the schedule, are also among the favourites according to the predictions. The English side have a 23.04% chance of finishing top of the league phase and a 21.34% probability of winning the Champions League.
Barcelona, meanwhile, are given better title-winning prospects than Real Madrid. The model assigns the Catalan side a 12.59% chance of lifting the trophy, compared with 6.13% for Los Blancos.
