Ahead of the next double-game week of the 2025–26 EuroLeague regular season, Real Madrid head coach Sergio Scariolo addressed the recent appointment of Chus Bueno as the new Chief Executive Officer of Euroleague Basketball.

Speaking during Monday’s pregame media session before Real Madrid’s clash with Panathinaikos Aktor at the OAKA Arena in Athens, the Italian coach reflected on the broader discussions surrounding the future of European basketball.

“Regardless of Chus’s involvement, we all hope for a more constructive dialogue, one focused on finding common ground rather than confrontation,” Scariolo said, referencing ongoing talks involving multiple stakeholders about the direction of the sport in Europe.

Real Madrid were among the clubs that supported the appointment of Bueno, at a time when joint efforts between the NBA and FIBA to launch a new elite competition, commonly referred to as NBA Europe, continue to shape the landscape.

“I may be somewhat biased because of my personal friendship with Chus, but I have enormous respect and admiration for him,” Scariolo admitted.

“Both professionally and personally, he is the right person at the right time,” he added regarding Bueno’s new role.

Scariolo also acknowledged the scale of the challenge ahead for the new CEO, who succeeds Paulius Motiejunas.

“Let’s be honest, this is an enormous and complex task. I don’t believe Motiejunas was the problem, but sometimes a different approach from someone with deeper and more personal relationships with the parties involved can make a difference,” the Real Madrid coach concluded.
