Rüdiger's contract extension allows Real Madrid to retain an experienced defender throughout the season. For Mourinho, his presence provides an option with extensive knowledge of the club and experience in high-pressure matches.

Should he leave at the end of the season, Real Madrid will have to assess whether their current squad has enough depth to cover his departure or whether another center-back will need to be signed.
