Real Madrid have reactivated an option that only months ago appeared completely ruled out. The club is once again considering Ibrahima Konaté as a potential reinforcement for the center-back position. The Liverpool defender is back on Madrid’s radar as his contract expires in June 2026 and negotiations over a renewal with the English club remain unresolved.
In December, Konaté seemed definitively discarded, much like Antonio Rüdiger was in 2022. However, with several priority targets no longer available, the French international has resurfaced as a serious candidate and is now emerging as one of the most viable options. According to Italian journalist Nicolò Schira, Real Madrid have stepped up their pursuit and have already submitted a proposal that would tie the defender to the club until 2031.
At 26, Konaté is coming off the best season of his career, although the current campaign has been more complicated. Uncertainty surrounding his future has impacted his performances, but in recent weeks he has shown clear signs of improvement. His resurgence has coincided with a general upturn in form from Liverpool, who struggled at the start of the season.
This change in circumstances has reopened the door for Real Madrid, who by the end of 2025 had informed Liverpool that the player was no longer a target. Now, following a complete shift in strategy, Konaté is once again a leading candidate to strengthen the defense and could ultimately end up at the Santiago Bernabéu.
