Real Madrid have a clear stance: there will be only one true backup to Kylian Mbappé. The French superstar, who will wear the number 10 shirt, is set to be the attacking reference once again. While it may not be his most natural position, his 44-goal haul last season leaves no room for doubt about his capabilities. The real question, however, is who will step in when Mbappé is unavailable or when Xabi Alonso chooses to rest him during matches.

Earlier in the transfer window, the club briefly explored the idea of signing a new striker to play the role once Joselu filled it. Osasuna's Ante Budimir was even considered. But that plan was shelved after Gonzalo García’s impressive showing at the Club World Cup. His emergence—and the reality of Endrick—has convinced the club to look internally for Mbappé’s alternative. Two young talents, one position, and one tough decision.

According to AS, the club now faces a dilemma. They made a major financial investment in Endrick, but the 19-year-old Brazilian hasn’t yet lived up to expectations. With limited opportunities under Carlo Ancelotti—just 843 minutes of playing time—Endrick was unable to fully showcase his talent. He still managed to score seven goals, but a late-season injury—and its recurrence during the U.S. tour—halted his momentum and opened the door for Gonzalo García to overtake him.

Endrick will be sidelined for two months, but those close to him insist that he won’t be leaving—not on loan, and certainly not permanently. He’s committed to staying and fighting for his place.

On the other side is Gonzalo García, the unexpected revelation of the summer. He shined during the Club World Cup, where he ended as the top scorer, earning the trust of the coaching staff. Still, despite his strong case, he’s the one most likely to leave. Getafe are eagerly awaiting his availability, and Premier League clubs are also showing serious interest. With two years left on his contract, talks are already underway to renew it, improve his salary, and promote him officially to the first team.

Real Madrid will soon have to make a decision. Both players are young, talented, and goal-hungry. But only one can truly step in when Kylian Mbappé is not on the pitch.
