Real Madrid enjoyed a historic Saturday across both football and basketball, winning two international titles on the same day and adding two more trophies to an already extraordinary collection.
The first came in the morning at a packed Santiago Bernabéu, where more than 50,000 fans watched Real Madrid claim the U-20 Intercontinental Cup after defeating Santiago Wanderers. The competition brings together the Youth League champions and the Libertadores youth champions to determine the best U-20 side in the world.
It capped a remarkable year for Álvaro López’s team, who have completed a quadruple by winning the U-20 Intercontinental Cup, Youth League, league title and Champions Cup. The importance of the achievement was reflected by the presence of Florentino Pérez, who joined the players on the pitch for the trophy celebrations and photographs.
Real Madrid then added another international title in the afternoon, with the basketball team winning the inaugural EuroLeague Super Cup after defeating Olympiacos in Abu Dhabi. The victory came against the same opponent Real Madrid faced in the previous European Cup final, adding another chapter to their rivalry.
The inaugural EuroLeague Super Cup is now the tenth different title won by Real Madrid’s basketball section. Before this triumph, the club had won 11 EuroLeague titles, 38 Spanish League titles, 29 Copa del Rey titles, 10 Spanish Super Cups, five Intercontinental Cups, four Saporta Cups, one Korac Cup, one ULEB Cup and one Latin Cup.
With the addition of the EuroLeague Super Cup, Real Madrid’s basketball trophy collection has now reached 101 titles.
