Real Madrid head into the international break with numbers that highlight the difficulties of the opening weeks of the season. The 2-1 defeat to Atlético Madrid at the Metropolitano has left José Mourinho’s side with 15 points from a possible 21, their lowest tally after seven LaLiga matches in seven years.
Real Madrid have won five of their seven league games, but defeats to Real Betis and Atlético Madrid have significantly affected their start. The last time the club had only 15 points after the opening seven matchdays was during the 2019/20 season, when Zinedine Zidane’s team had the same tally.
The comparison with last season is even more notable. Under Xabi Alonso, Real Madrid had collected 18 points from their first 21 available and had suffered only one defeat, also at the Metropolitano. Mourinho’s current side therefore have three fewer points at the same stage.
The 15-point tally also represents Mourinho’s second-worst start after seven league matches during his time as Real Madrid coach. The only time he had fewer points was in the 2012/13 season, when his team had collected just 11.
The biggest concern, however, is the league table. Barcelona already hold a six-point advantage over Real Madrid, while Atlético Madrid and Real Betis are also above them after seven rounds.
Such a situation this early in the season has increased the pressure on Mourinho. The Portuguese coach continues to have confidence in the process, but Real Madrid will return from the international break with a clear need to react and close the gap before the leaders move further ahead.
