Still recovering from the physical issues that have disrupted his start to the season, Raúl Asencio is temporarily stepping away from football as he prepares to appear in court in Gran Canaria.
The Real Madrid defender is scheduled to appear this Thursday at 9:00 AM local time before the courts of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, in his native Gran Canaria, where he is expected to be cleared of the privacy-related offence for which he has been charged.
The case dates back to the summer of 2023, when Asencio and several former Real Madrid youth players were on holiday at a beach club in southern Gran Canaria. A sexually explicit video involving two young women, one of whom was a minor at the time, and three academy players, Ferrán Ruiz, Andrés García and Juan Rodríguez, was recorded during the trip.
Asencio did not participate in the recording or appear in the images. However, he showed the video to a third party, which led to him being reported for an alleged offence against privacy.
Three years later, the case could now come to an end for Asencio. The two women involved have accepted his apology, with that acceptance expected to be formally recorded in court. The Public Prosecutor's Office is also expected to withdraw the charges against the defender.
If this takes place as anticipated, Asencio would be released from criminal liability in relation to the case. Spanish law allows criminal liability for certain semi-public offences against privacy to be extinguished when the victims formally accept an apology and the relevant legal conditions are met.
