Real Madrid have officially announced the departure of Sergio Scariolo as head coach of the basketball team, bringing his second spell at the club to an end.
The Italian coach leaves after a disappointing season in which Real Madrid failed to win a single title. The campaign ended with elimination in the Liga Endesa playoff quarterfinals against La Laguna Tenerife, losing both home games in the series.
Although Florentino Pérez publicly backed Scariolo shortly after the elimination, the club has now confirmed his departure in an official statement.
A new era will begin with Pedro Martínez, who takes over after Real Madrid reportedly paid Valencia Basket €1 million to secure his release.
