Pedja Mijatovic, a former Real Madrid player and ex–sporting director of the club, has weighed in on Vinicius Jr.’s contract situation following the boos the Brazilian received at the Santiago Bernabéu. Vinicius is currently under contract until 2027, and Mijatovic believes the club must act decisively.

The former Serbian international considers renewing Vinicius to be “a very intelligent strategy” for Real Madrid, highlighting two key reasons. First, he insists the club should continue to rely on the winger due to his undeniable quality. Second, a renewal would protect the club’s interests should a future transfer become necessary.

Mijatovic made it clear that Real Madrid cannot allow Vinicius to leave for free, while also acknowledging that the player’s on-field behavior sometimes clashes with the values and elegance traditionally associated with the club.

If Vinicius refuses to extend his contract, Mijatovic believes the club must take a firm stance. According to him, Real Madrid must always come before any individual, regardless of their status or talent. In that scenario, he argues that the club should actively seek a transfer.

“You can never allow a player or his representatives to dictate terms,” Mijatovic stressed, adding that Real Madrid will continue to win trophies with or without Vinicius.

The former director also warned that the club must make a decision soon. If Vinicius is demanding a contract on the level of Mbappé or Messi, Mijatovic interprets that as a lack of willingness to renew. In his view, if Vinicius chooses to see out his contract, so be it, but Real Madrid must always protect its own interests above all else.
