La Liga’s poor European run puts extra Champions League spot in doubt

Spanish football continues to face a deep crisis that has been developing over recent years. Since the start of the decade, La Liga clubs have seen a decline in purchasing power, while other leagues, particularly the Premier League, have experienced significant financial growth. This gap has made it increasingly difficult for Spanish teams to compete in the transfer market, leading to clear consequences in European competitions.

The performances of Spanish clubs across Europe this season have fallen short of expectations. Only two teams have reached the semifinals: Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League and Atlético Madrid in the Champions League. The rest have already been eliminated, with Real Madrid and Barcelona exiting the Champions League, and Celta Vigo and Real Betis knocked out of the Europa League.

These results could have serious implications for La Liga’s position in the UEFA coefficient rankings. The Bundesliga has closed the gap significantly, putting Spain’s standing under real threat. Only the top two leagues secure an additional Champions League spot, making the battle for ranking crucial. England currently leads with 26,569 points, followed by Spain with 21,406, while Germany sits just behind on 21,214.

Rayo Vallecano’s dramatic progression proved decisive in maintaining Spain’s advantage. The Madrid side came under heavy pressure when AEK Athens scored three goals to level the tie, but Isi Palazón’s late strike secured qualification. That goal has helped La Liga stay narrowly ahead, although the danger remains. With Atlético Madrid and Rayo Vallecano still competing, Germany also retains strong representation through Bayern Munich and Freiburg, both capable of boosting the Bundesliga’s coefficient.
