Real Madrid continue to face a difficult season, and now Toni Kroos has pointed directly at what he believes is the team’s biggest issue: the midfield.

After a turbulent campaign that began under Xabi Alonso and continued with Álvaro Arbeloa, the team has struggled to find consistency—and Kroos didn’t hold back in his assessment.

“I’m going to be honest… the midfield right now lacks personality. You can talk about tactics all day, but football is simple: if your midfield doesn’t control the tempo, your forwards will look lost.”

The German also used Vinícius Júnior as a clear example of the problem, suggesting the Brazilian is suffering from the lack of structure: “People say he’s inconsistent. Why? Because every time he gets the ball, it’s chaos. No structure, no timing… he’s forced to create magic out of nothing. That’s not football, that’s survival.”

Kroos emphasized that midfield dominance used to be the foundation of Madrid’s success: “At Real Madrid, the midfield dictated everything—the tempo, the space, the confidence. Now it feels like nobody wants responsibility. Too safe, too slow, too predictable.”

He concluded by making it clear where he believes the real issue lies, dismissing criticism of the attack: “Fans blame the strikers, but if you understand football, you know where the real problem is. And right now, it’s not pretty.”

With the club already working on solutions for next season, Kroos’ words add weight to the growing belief that rebuilding the midfield is Madrid’s top priority.
