The investigator examining the referees’ complaint against Real Madrid and president Florentino Pérez has recommended that the case be dismissed, according to AS. Meanwhile, the RFEF reportedly does not plan to take action against José Mourinho over his criticism of the refereeing following Sunday’s Madrid derby.

The referees’ union filed a complaint with the RFEF’s Competition Committee last May over comments made by Pérez, in which the Real Madrid president claimed that several of the club’s league titles had been “stolen” from him.

The referees had previously taken the matter to the Anti-Violence Commission, which initially dismissed the case, before the complaint was also submitted to the Competition Committee. The latter opened an investigation into Real Madrid and Pérez over his statements.

The complaint was based on comments made by the Real Madrid president during a press conference last May.

“I’ve been here for many seasons and I’ve won seven Champions Leagues and seven La Liga titles, because the others were stolen from me. Systemic corruption for two decades and it’s still the same referees. The same referees are still doing the same things, blatantly. This season they’ve stolen 16 or 18 points from us.”

The comments angered the referees’ union, which argued that Pérez’s statements went beyond legitimate criticism of individual decisions.

"These statements cannot be justified under the legitimate exercise of freedom of expression or sports criticism, given that Mr. Pérez is not simply pointing out isolated refereeing errors, but rather accusing the Refereeing Body of perpetrating a continuous crime of corruption over two decades," the union stated.

After several months of examining the case, the investigator recently proposed that the Competition Committee dismiss the proceedings. The case remains open for now, however, as the parties involved still have the opportunity to present their arguments.

According to sources consulted by AS, the recommendation is based on the existing legal and regulatory framework governing such matters. The sources reportedly believe it would be difficult to exclude these statements from the scope of freedom of expression without first reforming certain regulations and strengthening the relevant provisions.

Meanwhile, the RFEF has reportedly decided not to take disciplinary or legal action against Mourinho over his comments following the Atlético Madrid-Real Madrid derby.

The Real Madrid coach strongly criticised the refereeing and the Technical Committee of Referees during his post-match press conference, but the federation does not currently plan to pursue proceedings against him over those remarks.
