Josko Gvardiol has reportedly emerged as one of José Mourinho's priority transfer targets as the Real Madrid coach looks to strengthen his defensive options ahead of the new season.
The Croatian international, currently under contract with Manchester City until 2028, is highly valued by Mourinho due to his versatility. Capable of playing both as a central defender and a left-back, Gvardiol is viewed as an ideal fit for the manager's plans.
According to the report, Mourinho has conducted a detailed assessment of the squad and is particularly focused on adding defensive stability on the left side, especially given the attacking profiles of players such as Denzel Dumfries and Trent Alexander-Arnold on the opposite flank. Alongside Gvardiol, Riccardo Calafiori is also being considered.
However, Gvardiol remains the club's preferred option and the most difficult to sign. Despite an injury-disrupted campaign, the defender continues to enjoy a strong reputation at Manchester City, where he is valued for his professionalism, character and performances. The Premier League club invested €90 million to sign him from RB Leipzig in 2023 and reportedly have no intention of letting him leave easily.
Real Madrid are aware of the challenges involved and are also monitoring alternative options, with Calafiori viewed as a more attainable target.
Adding to the difficulty, Manchester City have already presented Gvardiol with a contract renewal offer despite the defender still having two years remaining on his current deal, underlining the club's commitment to keeping him.
Nevertheless, the report claims Real Madrid have received some encouragement. Gvardiol is said to be aware of the club's interest and Mourinho's desire to bring him to the Santiago Bernabéu. The Croatian international has reportedly asked Manchester City for time to consider his future while focusing on the World Cup with his national team.
For now, Real Madrid remain attentive as they wait to see whether an opportunity could emerge in the coming weeks.
