EuroLeague clubs are preparing for a crucial internal meeting on Monday, April 7, in Barcelona, where the league’s 13 shareholders will discuss the competition’s future and its stance on the NBA’s potential expansion into Europe.

With growing speculation about the NBA’s ambitions, EuroLeague executives are pushing for full transparency to determine which clubs remain fully committed and which may be open to alternative opportunities.

While the NBA has not publicly confirmed specific teams involved in its European expansion plans, Real Madrid is reportedly a primary target. Sources suggest that if Madrid joins the project, FC Barcelona could follow, potentially altering the landscape of European basketball.

Beyond these two Spanish powerhouses, other key EuroLeague clubs are believed to be on the NBA’s radar. However, their level of interest remains uncertain.

Tony Parker, majority owner of ASVEL Villeurbanne, has already expressed interest in discussing potential participation in an NBA Europe league, though it remains unclear if the NBA considers ASVEL a serious contender for its exclusive group of franchises.

The EuroLeague leadership aims to establish a unified stance among shareholders and strategize its evolution in response to the NBA’s looming presence.

The NBA, in partnership with FIBA, recently reaffirmed its intent to explore an NBA Europe league, which could feature up to 16 teams, some of which would be newly established franchises backed by major European football brands. However, several EuroLeague teams are also seen as potential candidates for the league’s inaugural season.

Despite this, EuroLeague executives remain confident in their product. CEO Paulius Motiejunas has publicly stated that the league is united and committed to growing its competition, emphasizing ongoing support from clubs, players, and coaches.
