In the 85th minute, the atmosphere at El Sardinero was deafening. Racing Santander fans were furious with Munuera Montero, their anger mixed with frustration and gratitude towards their team for avoiding an even heavier defeat after trailing 3-0 at half-time.
The match was then stopped for what would be Real Madrid's final substitution. The number 25 appeared on the electronic board, signalling that Diomande would make way for Endrick. However, the Ivorian was positioned on the opposite side of the pitch from the substitution area and chose not to cross the field. With Real Madrid leading 3-0, he walked along the touchline and headed towards the dressing room.
Suddenly, amid the tension surrounding the match, a loud round of applause broke out as the Real Madrid forward made his way off the pitch. Why was Diomande walking away without his shirt? The answer was in the stands, where Racing's academy players were watching the game, and one young fan was holding a Real Madrid shirt.
As the substitution was announced, the boy began shouting: "Diomande, give me your shirt! Diomande, give me your shirt!" The player initially walked past without reacting, seemingly unaware of the request. But he soon stopped, turned around and looked for the young fan who was calling out to him. He then approached the front row of the stand opposite the VIP box and handed him his shirt.
The boy could hardly contain his happiness as he hugged his new treasure. His excitement was matched by a thunderous ovation from that section of the stadium. Those who witnessed the moment, along with those who later heard about it, joined in an unexpected tribute to Diomande amid an otherwise tense atmosphere.
