Real Madrid allowed Luka Modric to leave at the end of last season after both parties agreed not to renew his contract. According to Fabrizio Romano, the club now considers that decision a mistake, particularly in terms of the leadership lost in the dressing room.
The club now faces a similar situation with Dani Carvajal. The full-back, who serves as captain and remains one of the most influential figures in the squad, sees his contract expire at the end of the season. However, concerns over his recent performances, affected by recurring injuries, have raised doubts about his future.
Real Madrid must now decide whether to extend Carvajal’s contract and avoid a repeat of the Modric situation, or allow him to leave. The final decision is also expected to depend on the plans of the club’s next manager.
