Borussia Dortmund are facing a major challenge in their efforts to renew Nico Schlotterbeck’s contract. The biggest obstacle is one that every European club fears: Real Madrid. According to Bild, the German defender is reluctant to extend his deal, which runs until 2027, due to strong interest from the Spanish giants, who have reportedly already made their intentions clear.
The same source claims that a final decision regarding his future could come before Germany’s international fixtures against Switzerland and Ghana in March. At this stage, Schlotterbeck is said to be weighing up just two options: staying at Dortmund or making the move to Real Madrid.
Although Bayern Munich had also been linked with the center-back, their current priority is resolving Dayot Upamecano’s situation. Meanwhile, Bild reports that Real Madrid are planning to sign two central defenders this summer, one of them left-footed like Schlotterbeck. The estimated transfer fee would range between €40 million and €50 million.
The context further strengthens Madrid’s interest. Both David Alaba and Antonio Rüdiger are set to see their contracts expire in the summer, forcing the club to explore defensive reinforcements. For Schlotterbeck, now 26, the timing could be ideal for a major step forward in his career, especially with uncertainty surrounding his renewal at Dortmund.
