Raúl Asencio experienced a frightening ordeal last Wednesday after a violent collision with Eduardo Camavinga forced him to leave the pitch on a stretcher during Real Madrid’s victory over Benfica.

While Madrid secured the win, the most reassuring news came later from the hospital, where medical tests ruled out any serious injury.

Speaking to RMTV, Asencio recalled the incident as best as he could given the severity of the blow. “I remember it was an aerial ball and I went for the challenge. The next thing I remember is being on the ground with the doctors after the hit from Camavinga,” the Canary Islander explained.

The defender admitted he briefly lost awareness. “I lost track of time, where I was, what was happening. I only started to remember things again inside the tunnel. It was a very unpleasant moment.”

He also described the physical sensations he experienced immediately after the impact. “I thank the doctor and all the medical staff for everything they did. I remember not having clear vision, not being able to move properly, losing strength. It was a very unpleasant feeling.”

Asencio revealed that he was unaware of the atmosphere at the Santiago Bernabéu until later. “I couldn’t really feel it at the stadium, but once I arrived at the hospital and regained full awareness, I was able to check my phone and see all the messages of support. I’m truly grateful. The Real Madrid fans have welcomed me in a very special way, and I feel it. I want to thank them.”

The defender also highlighted the backing from his teammates. “The team rallied around me immediately. As soon as I picked up my phone again, I had messages from all of them. I didn’t even know what minute the play had happened or how the match ended. The doctors were telling me, but I didn’t know how much time was left. When I finally checked my phone at the hospital, I saw all the messages.”

Despite the scare, the center-back can now focus on recovery with the reassurance that the incident did not result in lasting damage.
