Raúl Asencio spoke to Radio MARCA Gran Canaria during the special program “MARCA está en el bombo”, aired ahead of the Christmas Lottery draw. The defender admitted that he doesn’t usually buy lottery tickets himself, although his family always asks him for tickets from the famous Doña Manolita. Shortly before receiving a tribute from the Las Palmas Inter-Island Football Federation for his involvement in charitable initiatives linked to the Foundation, Asencio reflected on the importance of staying grounded: “If you lose humility and your essence, you lose all your values as an athlete. I’m very happy to collaborate on these kinds of initiatives.” Returning to Gran Canaria, he added, “It’s always special to be back home.”

Looking back on his year, the center-back described 2025 as “very good and very special,” marking his first full season at the top level. “It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions, but we’ve always managed to bounce back. The most important thing is that things have gone well, and I hope 2026 brings more of the same,” he said. Asencio also highlighted the trust he receives from Xabi Alonso: “He gives me confidence to play in different positions, and that makes me very happy.”

Among the tougher moments, Asencio mentioned the boos he often faces when playing away from the Bernabéu. Rather than affecting him negatively, he explained that they motivate him: “I’m strong in those situations. I focus on playing and on what I do best.”

A product of Las Palmas’ youth academy, Asencio follows UD Las Palmas closely and never misses a match. He spoke warmly of Luis García Fernández, his former coach at Real Madrid C: “He’s a great person, very humane, and a top coach.” As for a potential return to his boyhood club, he acknowledged it would be difficult in the short term but left the door open for the future, insisting that despite wearing white, the yellow shirt “will always be in my heart.”
