Pre- and post-match press conferences often become a stage for subtle digs and indirect jabs, and this week was no exception.
Ahead of the Copa del Rey clash between Atlético Madrid and Barcelona, Hansi Flick was asked whether his side had been fortunate with the cup draw. The German coach responded with a pointed remark: “Ask Real Madrid,” referencing Los Blancos’ elimination at the hands of Segunda División side Albacete.
Just 48 hours later, it was Álvaro Arbeloa’s turn to step up to the microphone. In the press conference prior to Real Madrid’s LaLiga fixture against Real Sociedad, he was asked whether he had watched the Copa del Rey match between Atlético and Barcelona.
The Madrid coach did not hesitate with his reply: “I have nothing to say. Ask Barcelona, Flick.”
A brief answer, but one that clearly echoed the earlier comment and added another chapter to the ongoing verbal sparring.
