NBA commissioner Adam Silver met with Real Madrid officials in Paris this week to explore the club’s potential involvement in a new European basketball league backed by the NBA.
According to The Athletic, the meeting was part of a broader initiative led by Silver and top league executives, including deputy commissioner Mark Tatum and Europe/Middle East regional director George Aivazoglou, to connect with key teams and investors as the NBA pushes forward with its NBA Europe project.
Sources cited by The Athletic say there’s growing optimism among European insiders that if Real Madrid signs on, other major EuroLeague clubs may be tempted to follow.
The NBA is reportedly monitoring four EuroLeague powerhouses as potential early joiners: Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, ASVEL Basket (part-owned by Tony Parker), and Fenerbahçe Istanbul.
As part of the league’s European tour, the NBA delegation also held meetings with ALBA Berlin, discussing the German club’s potential role in the proposed league.
More meetings in Paris are expected in the coming days. Prior to this visit, NBA executives, including Silver, had already met with representatives from the Qatari Investment Authority, owners of Paris Saint-Germain, to discuss the possibility of creating a new basketball franchise based in the French capital.
