Olympique Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi has joined the growing debate over refereeing in La Liga following Dean Huijsen’s controversial dismissal during Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory against Real Sociedad.
Speaking ahead of his side’s clash with the Spanish giants, De Zerbi openly questioned Jesús Gil Manzano’s decision: “Huijsen wasn’t the last man. I don’t understand how the referee interpreted it that way.”
The young defender was sent off in the 32nd minute after bringing down Mikel Oyarzabal. Gil Manzano deemed the foul as denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity, even though many argue Éder Militao was close enough to cover.
Reduced to ten men for almost an hour, Real Madrid still managed to secure all three points at Anoeta. But the incident has sparked further outrage from Madridistas and intensified scrutiny of officiating in Spain. De Zerbi’s comments add weight to Real Madrid’s stance, with the club reportedly preparing formal complaints to highlight what they view as inconsistency in similar refereeing situations.
