Former FC Barcelona striker Gary Lineker (1986–1989) has publicly defended Vinícius Júnior and strongly condemned racism in football in remarks that have gone viral worldwide.
Speaking on the podcast The Rest Is Football, Lineker criticized José Mourinho for what he described as manipulation: “Jose Mourinho blamed Vinicius, but that’s manipulation. It’s wrong.”
He stressed the broader responsibility within the sport: “It’s very important that not only black players raise their voices.”
Referring to the alleged racist abuse directed at Vinicius during the match, Lineker added: “What happened on Tuesday night was distressing. Let’s remember who the victim was and stay on the right side.”
The former England striker also pointed out that racist gestures were visible from the stands and described the backlash against Vinicius as “very sad,” concluding: “Racism distorts the beautiful game. This goes beyond football.”
